Endodontics is the branch of dentistry that involves the care and treatment of your teeth’s internal tissues with procedures such as root canal therapy.
An endodontist primarily treats or prevents infections of the dental pulp at the centre of each tooth.
Dental pulp is the soft tissue that contains all the nerves of a tooth. The pulp can become infected, either through severe decay or an injury that compromises the surface of the tooth and allows bacteria to enter. You will require a root canal treatment to clear the infection and eliminate the otherwise-inevitable need for a tooth extraction.
Your dentist will use a small file to remove the infected tissue from the root canal under a local anaesthetic, before sealing the tooth with a filling material. In many cases, they will also fit a crown to protect the tooth and restore its functionality.
